Mental Health is an essential part of the Fire Service

The fire service trains for everything. The Fire to Light Foundation is here to ensure that preventive mental health is part of that training.

We prepare for every type of crisis.

What about the silent ones?

About the Foundation

The Fire to Light Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing preventative mental health in the global fire service.

In the fire service, we know that prevention saves lives. The Foundation was built to make sure that Fire Departments are prepared for every part of the job, including the parts that are hard to talk about.

We cannot predict or prevent every injury in this profession. But we do not have to wait for a crisis to do something about it.

Mental Health challenges are becoming more common in the fire service, from burnout and moral injury, to psychological injury.  They build slowly, accumulate quietly, and often surface without warning.

This is exactly why Mental Fitness matters.  The Foundation's upstream approach to mental health is focused on training, education and preparing Fire Departments to mentally perform; equipping members with the tools to face the chaos, the same way we train for every other aspect of firefighting.

Mental Fitness is not separate from firefighter performance. It is part of it. The Fire to Light Foundation is here to ensure that Mental Fitness training becomes a part of how firefighters train, perform, and prepare.

The Mission

To help move fire departments from awareness into operationalizing mental health, by embedding Mental Fitness into how firefighters train: in preparation, performance, and recovery.

The Vision

A future where proactive mental health training is as fundamental to the fire service as any other firefighting modality; trained consistently, taken seriously, and embedded into the culture at every level.

Training and Education

A Bit about what we do...

The Fire to Light Foundation provides research-backed Mental Fitness training and education built specifically for the fire service. Everything we do is focused on one goal: helping shift how the fire service approaches mental health. Not awareness posters. Not a one-time seminar, but Actual training. The kind that gets repeated, evaluated, and built into how departments prepare their people: the same way we train every other skill on the job.

The fire service is exceptional at training. Mental health training deserves the same attention.

Mental Fitness Training System

A comprehensive mental fitness training system designed to be implemented and systemized at the department level: built for the entire organization, from recruits to chiefs, providing the tools, education, and structure needed to build and sustain a culture of mental fitness.

Individual Mental Fitness Certification Available directly to individual members of the fire service or those aspiring to join it. A self-directed program built around the realities of the job: practical, accessible, and designed to support mental fitness throughout a career.

Leadership & Education Training

For those ready to operationalize Mental Fitness training in their department. We provide workshops, training, and accountability support for fire service leadership, administration, and peer support teams.

Research & Awareness

We support and advance research into preventative mental health in the fire service and work to raise global awareness of the critical need for upstream Mental Fitness training: helping shift how mental health is understood, valued, and trained across the profession.

Who we are

The Fire to Light Foundation is governed by a board of directors that reflects the full spectrum of what this mission requires: operational experience, health expertise, financial stewardship, and governance leadership.

Our board brings together retired fire service commanders with decades of frontline and command experience, a paramedic and emergency services leader, a doctor of chiropractic and internationally recognized functional medicine practitioner specializing in nervous system regulation and preventative health, senior executives with backgrounds in financial oversight and organizational leadership, and public sector professionals with experience in regulatory compliance and governance.

We are firefighters, paramedics, doctors, and executives who understand both the demands of this profession and what it takes to build an organization capable of changing it.
